Vegas Culinary Workers Union Are Cooking Up Their First Strike In Almost 30 Years

Nevada State Flag Icon Las Vegas hospitality workers seeking a new deal with some Vegas casinos have authorized a strike against three major casino brands: MGM, Caesars, and Wynn Resorts.

The Culinary Workers Union has not gone on strike since 1984, and today there are over 60,000 members. The last five-year deal ended in May of 2023 but was extended to Sept 15th; however, a new deal has yet to be agreed upon by both parties. Approximately 40k workers at 18 casino resorts are currently working under expired contracts.

Nearly two weeks ago, the strike was authorized with the hope of having a new deal by Oct 6th, but talks between the parties have stalled, and the date has passed. Workers ask that patrons not cross the picket lines at eight Caesars and MGM properties: New York-New York, Park MGM, Harrah’s, the Flamingo, the Linq, Horseshoe, Paris, and Planet Hollywood.

The strike has made headlines worldwide, and the White House has recently chimed in with President Biden voicing his support for the unions.

Will The Strike Affect 18+ Online Casinos?

Nevada does not allow their domestic casinos to offer their services online, and the 18+ casino sites that do operate in the state are all located outside state lines. Online casinos will not be affected by the ongoing strikes since there are no culinary workers, and the casinos are all located outside the state.

The Culinary Workers Union has indicated that the strikes will occur between 10 and 12 p.m. and 5-7 p.m., but a specific start date has yet to be confirmed. The Union’s lead negotiator has stated that talks with the Vegas-based casino resorts have been disappointing and that the two sides remain significantly apart.

Are Online Casinos Legal In Nevada?

Nevada’s 18+ online casinos operate legally outside the United States if they comply with compliance regulations from trusted gaming commissions. Offshore casino sites can legally offer their services to the states, as no federal gambling laws prevent them from operating.

State laws also do not prohibit gambling online; however, some casino sites do not offer their services online due to the over-saturation of online and domestic casinos.

What Online Casino Games Are Available In Las Vegas?

The online casino games you will find in Las Vegas rival what you expect in the casinos with blackjack, slots, video poker, baccarat, and many more options. Some online casinos have even extended their services to include live dealer games via a real-time video and audio feed.

Our readers typically prefer online games as there are no picket lines or vast crowds of people, and online sites offer lower wagers, which provides more extended entertainment. While we enjoy a great casino resort experience, online casinos are more accessible and only require time and no travel accommodations.
