Is Online Casino Gambling The Future Of US Betting?

Online Games IconNow that in-person and online sports betting has exploded across the United States after repealing the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA), many people believe online casinos are the next logical step.

Today, domestic online casino gambling is only legal in a handful of states: Connecticut, Delaware, Michigan, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, and West Virginia. However, due to a lack of state and federal laws, 18+ online casinos from outside the US are available in nearly all 50 states.

Elizabeth Suever, a vice president with Bally’s Corporation, told the Associated Press that the future of gambling is online. Suever also said that millennials are comfortable living their whole lives on their phones, and this is where gaming is going.

Following the 2018 repeal of PASPA, many industry insiders thought that online casinos would be the next logical step. However, that has not been the case. Brandt Iden, a vice president with Fanatics Betting & Gaming, stated that online casino legalization has been a rough road. Iden also reiterated that iGaming is paramount; this is the direction the industry needs to go.

Cesar Fernandez, a senior director with FanDuel, said that online casino games should be attractive to states post-pandemic now that federal aid has dried up. Online casino legislation has faced several hurdles, including the stigmatism linked to gambling. Many legislatures feel that putting an online slot machine in people’s pockets is not the best way to accrue income for the state.

Online Casino Critics

For some, online casinos can lead to gambling addiction due to their ease of access; however, that has never been proven to be the case. Critics of online gambling also state that online casino ventures could gut domestic casinos and hurt tourism. Online mobile casinos had accepted US players since the late 1990s, when the internet boom took America by storm. Seasoned players tend to gravitate towards the online gambling market as those sites are easily accessible and convenient.
