Mark Cuban recently sold his majority stake in the Dallas Mavericks to Miriam Adelson, the widow of casino entrepreneur Sheldon Adelson.
The news of Cuban’s sale to Adelson has sparked rumors that the former tech giant is eyeing a Dallas-area casino. However, state gambling laws must change before Dallas sees a commercial casino.
News sources have reported that Cuban has pitched the idea of a partnership with Adelson and the Las Vegas Sands Corp. to build a state-of-the-art casino centered around a new arena for the NBA team. Cuban has also stated that the team will stay in Dallas and that the sale of his majority stake in the team will help build a new arena and put the Mavs in a better position to compete in the future.
The Adelson’s have spent millions of dollars lobbying for the state’s casino and sports gambling expansion and have reportedly donated $1 million to current Governor Greg Abbot. In December 2022, Cuban told the media that he wanted to partner with Sands and build a new arena for the team in the middle of a resort casino.
