The city of Jackson, Mississippi, is currently evaluating a proposal to establish a casino in its downtown area. This initiative, led by the group Capital City Forward Together—which includes notable figures such as former Governor Haley Barbour—aims to revitalize the city’s economy by attracting tourism and creating more employment opportunities.
Under existing Mississippi law, casinos are restricted to locations along the Gulf Coast and the Mississippi River. The proposed Jackson casino would require legislative amendments to permit its development within the city’s downtown area.
The proponents suggest situating the casino within a mile of the State Capitol in downtown Jackson. They argue that this strategic placement would invigorate the city’s core, stimulate economic growth, and counteract the population decline Jackson has experienced over the past five decades.
Councilman Kenneth Stokes recently told the media that he has been getting questions about the proposal from numerous Jackson citizens. Stokes said, “We must have some assurance that crime will not increase in Jackson.” Stokes went on to say that the proposal will be addressed during the next city council meeting, and he hopes to be able to answer more questions concerning where the casino will be located downtown.
Mississippi Casino Laws
Current laws concerning local Mississippi casinos limit brick-and-mortar locations to the Gulf Coast and along the Mississippi River. New legislation would have to be passed for a casino in downtown Jackson. The process involves drafting a bill, which will then be reviewed and voted on by the state legislature.
The Mississippi Gaming Commission, first established in 1990, regulates all casino gaming in the state. Today, there are more than 33 commercial casinos and six tribal gaming facilities in the state.
Jackson officials have expressed their efforts to pass new legislation allowing casinos in the city to revitalize the city and create more employment opportunities.
Online Mississippi Casinos
Mississippi casinos are restricted to only allow players over the age of 21. Due to a lack of laws, 18+ online MS casinos are permitted online from out-of-state sites operating legally from a trusted jurisdiction.
Online casinos have accepted Mississippi players since the early 2000s and have become the go-to source for many players in the Hospitality State. Popular online casino gaming options include live dealer games, blackjack, baccarat, slots, roulette, and specialty games. With multiple variations and endless slot titles, online casinos have something for every type of player.
